The Messerschmitt BF110 Series.
The Messerschmitt BF110A "Anton" & B "Bertha".
The BF110 was designed as a three-seat strategic fighter, or Zerstörer : a warplane possessing sufficient performance and armament for deep penetration offensive sorties, bomber escort missions and the mounting of long-distance standing patrols.
Conceived around the Daimler-Benz DB 600, the first of three prototypes, the Bf110 V1, was flown with two of these engines on 12 May 1936.
The decision to replace the carburettor-equipped DB 600 with the direct-fuel-injection DB 601, and the delays in Daimler-Benz engine availability in consequence, dictated installation of the 680 hp Junkers Jumo 210Da in the four examples of the pre-series Bf110A-0.
All of these were assigned Versuchs numbers and featured revised nose contours, the first, the Bf110 V4, flying on 21 January 1938.
Ten additional pre-series aircraft were powered by Junkers Jumo 210Ga engines of 730 hp at 3.280 ft (1.000 m) as Bf110B-0s.
The first of the similarly-powered produktion Bf110B-1s followed in July 1938.
The armament of the Bf110B-1 comprised two 20 mm MG FF cannon and four 7.9 mm machine guns in the nose, and a single 7.9 mm gun in the rear cockpit.
The Jumo-engined B-series were considered as interim aircraft pending availability of the DB 601 engined C-series, and only some 45 were completed.
Of these, several were delivered as Bf110B-2s with cannon removed and camera installed, and most were later modified as Bf110B-3 trainers.
Specification : Bf110B-1.
Year : 1936.
Type : Long-range, heavy, all weather fighter.
Crew : Two or three (pilot, observer/radio operator and gunner).
Power plant : Two Junkers Jumo 210Ga 12 cylinder, liquid cooled engines each developing 730 hp.
Dimensions : Span ; 55 ft 5.1/3 in (16.90 m). Length ; 41 ft 4 in (12,60 m). Height ; 11 ft 4.2/3 in (3.47 m). Wing area ; 418.72 sq ft (38.90 sq m).
Weights : Max loaded weight ; 12.562 lb (5.700 kg).
Performance : Max speed ; 283 mp/h (455 km/h) at 13.125 ft (4.000 m). Max range 1.070 miles (1.720 km).
Armament : Two 20 mm MG FF cannon and four 7.9 mm MG 17 machine guns in the nose and one 7.9 mm MG 15 machine gun on flexible mount in rear cockpit.
